Mayra’s Story

Mayra’s Story

When I was suddenly diagnosed with breast cancer, it was dark times for me and my family.

My name is Mayra. My husband, Lorenzo, and I are parents to two wonderful boys. We’ve called Buena Park home since my eldest was born. Lorenzo’s hours were cut back, leaving us struggling to make ends meet. I embarked on a job search hoping to find a way to support my family. It was during this challenging time that I discovered Friendly Center.

I was provided with emergency food and hygiene supplies without hesitation, easing the immediate burden on my family. I quickly enrolled in the job development and food distribution program, ensuring my boys wouldn’t go to bed hungry. Then life threw another curve ball. I received a devastating diagnosis: advanced breast cancer. The urgency of starting chemotherapy meant putting my job search on hold.

It was a dark time for us. My husband was doing his best, but our financial strain was growing. Amidst the turmoil, Friendly Center became my family’s lifeline. I received counseling and case management, helping me navigate the emotional and practical challenges of my diagnosis. They didn’t just offer assistance; they
restored my hope.

As medicals bills mounted, our financial situation becoming increasingly precarious, Friendly Center stepped in once again. With rental assistance and crucial support during the holidays, my family found solace in knowing we weren’t alone. Unable to afford the rent with my husband’s single income, the rental assistance program saved us when we needed to use the money for urgent repairs on our family vehicle. From utility assistance to educational workshops to Thanksgiving meals and toys for the holidays, Friendly Center continues to stand by my family.

Today, I’m in remission and working toward earning my GED through Friendly Center’s High School Equivalency Program, gaining the skills I need for a brighter future.

Mayra and her family’s lives were offered a lifeline because of supporters like you. As Friendly Center closes this chapter of 100 years of services, and enters a new era of the next 100 years, we invite you to give to support the next family in need. Click here to give today.
